State's Attorney
Mission Statement:
The mission of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office is to achieve justice.
Responsibilities:
The State’s Attorney’s Office handles felony, misdemeanor, infraction, and traffic cases in district court, as well as juvenile court matters, child support enforcement, and mental health hearings. In addition, The State’s attorney is the legal advisor for all county officials and chief prosecuting officer of the county.
Criminal Investigations:
If someone feels that he/she is the victim of a crime (as opposed to a civil matter), they should report it to law enforcement for investigation. If the crime occurred in McHenry County, it should be reported to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at (701) 537-5633. After the investigation is complete, the State’s Attorney’s Office will review the matter and determine whether criminal charges will be filed and what the charges will be.
Note:
The State’s Attorney does not provide the public with legal advice on private (civil) matters. If you have a civil matter, please contact a private attorney.
